That quote is something that he literally muttered out loud in his first graduate economics class. The simple skeptical notion that popped into his 24-year-old head has guided him ever since. There is a profound disconnect between the thought experiments that gradually came to dominate academia (and Wall Street finance) and the very real and messy world inhabited by people. This disconnect came to a disastrous head in 2008. His view of the financial world is from outside Wall Street and outside the Beltway. Mr. Ashburn talked about the tools you can use to make rational sense of the investment landscape. A lot has been written about the causes of the financial crises, but he took us deeper into the flawed intellectual underpinnings that led to the mess.

Rick Ashburn is founder and Chief Investment Officer of Creekside Partners Wealth Management in Lafayette. He was graduated with High Honors in Economics from the University of Maryland, and attended the graduate school of economics at UCLA. Rick holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”) designation, considered the global standard for institutional-level investment management. He has worked as an investment analyst and adviser for 25 years, and today focuses his career on helping private families protect and grow their life savings.
