Lance Morgan, Ph.D.
"Ocean Conservation in 21st Century"
Dr.
Morgan will present an overview of ocean conservation issues and
discuss how MCBI (Marine Conservation Biology Institute) addresses
conservation from Sonoma to the High Seas. He will also discuss
his recent expedition to the Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., piloting
a one-man submarine to 1800 feet.
Dr. Morgan received his Ph.D. in Ecology from UC-Davis, and did postdoctoral research at Bodega Marine Laboratory and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Fisheries before joining MCBI in 2000. From 1991-1995 he worked at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito as Science Director and Marine Mammalogist. Since joining MCBI Lance has led the effort to identify priority conservation areas from Baja California to the Bering Sea for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation and authored the influential Shifting Gears study which focused on collateral damage from commercial fishing. He is currently the Conservation Chair of the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council.
Dr. Morgan has lived in the Valley of the Moon for two decades. He and his wife, Angela, and their son reside in Glen Ellen. He coaches soccer, likes to hike, kayak and swim and enjoys making wine.
